The Avalon Geography

 

This Collection of writings lists the most significant geographic features and phenomena on the continent of Avalon, on the planet Tyrra.

 

This work contains references to most major features of the world of Tyrra that are in and near the Kingdom of Evendarr. The Evendarrian Cartographers Guild has been updating its written works since 598 ER and will continue to add information as their explorers return with information.

 

Other parts of Avalon are expected to be included as early as January 602.

 

I. Bodies of Water

 

Arawyn Lake: This lake lies in the southern end of the Arawyn Mountains of Blackstone, and is the headwaters for the river Klew. It is approximately twelve miles in diameter and the water is unusually warm for so high an altitude of lake.

 

Bay of Pecare’: Also known as Ravenholt Bay, this large bay is fed by the Green, Blood, and Dragonwash rivers. The bay is very seep and filled year round with cold water. Especially amazing is Dragoncliff Falls, a stunning three hundred-foot tall waterfall where the Dragonwash river plunges into the bay.

 

Crystal Lake: This lake fills a great basin in central Dinsdale, where it is fed by the Icewash, Din, and Clear rivers. The water is crystal clear, and is kept warm by hot springs in the area. The lake seldom freezes over until the coldest heart of the winter. This lake is the fresh water supply for Dinsdale, as the local water table is too low to support wells. Mysteriously, the lake does not drain, but also has not flooded that Voltan Barony.

 

Darksands Bay: Fed by the Red and Black rivers, this is the safest inlet on the east coast of Evendarr. The bay takes its name from the black sand beaches around its southern shores, which were created by the shield volcano, Mt Sarobar in the Black Hills. The bay is common to most forms of sea life, and provides many novelties that appear in Braughm-Raor.

 

Daven Sound: is the only penetration to the heartland along the stone wall of mountains along the Rotarian coast. The sound, also known as “The Arm of Destruction,” is tricky and dangerous for unfamiliar pilots to navigate. There are rocky bottoms and strong riptides to be dealt with, and none, easily. The capital city of Daven lies at the end of the sound.

 

Dwarf Reservoir: surrounded by the Grond Hills, this body of water was formed by the dwarves in Takkardia, who dammed the headwaters of the Forge river to supply water to their large waterwheels. Wrapped around the base of Mt Roder, the reservoir is azure blue in color, and is an amazing spectacle viewed during the fall against the backdrop of the foliage.

 

Fellmist Sea: This large bay intrudes onto the continent of Avalon, west of Therendry, and south of the Gallyamath Forest. The Isles De Hoenig protrudes through the western part of the sea. This sea is unusually warm as compared to the surrounding oceanic waters. This causes an eerie and often dangerous fog to rise over these waters on cool nights. One particular area of this sea is rumored to be patrolled by a ghost ship haunted by the spirits of seafarers whose ships wrecked in that fog. The sea itself is rich in fish and crustaceans. Fishermen ccome from all over the eastern coast to work these waters.

 

Lake Ardynn: This huge lake is almost 5 miles long. Situated between Unity and Ravenholt, this lake has a vibrant blue hue, supposedly due to the clay and silts that erode from the Frostpeak Mountains. Lake Ardynn is the headwater for the Blood River, and freezes shortly after the first deep frosts of winter. It is rumored that a large beast resides in the lake, and that that beast is responsible for many deaths on the lake itself, and along the lakeshore.

 

Lake Birtzan: (In Ignavis? See Birtzan River.) Lake Birtzan is the headwater of the Birtzan River. It is located on the edge of the Nishapur Forest.

 

Lake Helevorn: This lake is formed of the flood runoff from both the Greenmarch and Arawyn Mountains. Fed by the Lorin, Elorin, and Klew rivers, Lake Helevorn is long and thin, and nearly a hundred feet deep at its deepest points. Runoff from this lake escapes down the Rinmor River.

 

Lake Hollym: This immense lake separates Evendarr Plain from Nordenn Vale. Shallow along the edges, but very deep in the center, Lake Hollym measures some 35 miles wide, and 80 miles in length. Fed by the Endyr and Woodwash rivers it is a geographic anomaly, as it drains off to both the Green and Red rivers. On an island within this lake resides the Royal Academy of Arcane Arts and Sciences.

 

Lake Jauf: Located in Myrr, this lake is generated by the Jauf River, and many small springs that bring in fresh clear water, rich supplies of nutrients, and minerals. This lake though wide is fairly shallow. Its deepest point is estimated at about 12 fathoms. It drains into the Shiraz River. The Jauf sarr clan inhabits the lands on and around this lake.

 

Lake Quentari: Also known as Loca Barnus, this lake is really more of an Inland Sea than a lake. Well over 150 miles long north to south, and about half that wide east to west, this lake is a natural center of activity, bordered by several different countries. Myrr, Quentari, Evendarr and Dar Khabad all surround the huge lake. This lake reaches depths of up to 1200 feet and is home to several very rare and exotic types of life. This lake has many tributaries, but drains to the sea through the Gateway River, which is an amazing geographic feature in its own right.

 

Mountain Loch: North of Eastwyck and Cathym.

 

Sword Lake: This lake is located in the Duchy of Therendry. We are awaiting the return of our academics sent to scout the lake shore.

 


II. Large Forests

Ash Forest, Barony of the Ash Forest, Duchy of Ashbury: Here can be found some of the greatest stands of ash and cedar wood on the continent of Avalon. The Amani, also known as Wild Elves, make their homes here along with the Wood elves. Few roads within the Ash Forest lead anywhere other than its capital, Zinfeledin. The forest is surrounded to the north and west by the Tower Hills. The view of the forest from these hills is reputed to be quite beautiful.

 

Ayden Forest: This forest spans the Southern tip of Therendry. We are awaiting the return of our academics sent to scout the lake shore.

 

Darvazan Forest: The largest stands of hardwood in Myrr are found here. The forest is home to the Darvaza sarr, the Lynx clan. The forest also contains a species of small deer that is very delicious. During the spring, a hunting tournament is held there. The woods are quite thick enough to discourage casual travel.

 

Dawyndriel Forest: One of three great forests of Quentari, the Dawyndriel is a dark forest with little low ground cover. Maple and Walnut are the most common varieties of trees, but oak, ash, and pine are also found there. The trees grow very tall, and the Wood elves that inhabit this forest live high above the forest floor in tree villages. These villages are linked by an intricate system of bridges. This forest covers the foothills that border the Greenmarch Mountains.

 

Demalon Wood: Northlands

 

Dryad Wood: Between Greymoor and Zyr is a forest that few are willing to talk about, and fewer still are willing to venture into it. Dryad Wood’s dark forest cover and perennial mists cast it in a poor light and inspire rumors. Strange sounds and lights emanate from these woods at night. The source of these occurrences is unknown, but notable rumors of a powerful Liche living within the wood are one common theory. Commonly found trees are oak, maple, and pine amongst others. A group of rangers reputedly resides within the Dryad Wood, offering assistance to wayfarers there who are in need.

 

Falcon Forest: Bordering the Otiket River in southern Quentari, this forest forms one of the southern baronies of the kingdom of Quentari, and is home to a rare group of elves, "The Falconers." This society of elves has grown to co-exist with their falcons, living and hunting as a team. Clearings are common among the sparse cover of pine, birch, and oak. Game is relatively scarce.

 

Falconrest Forest: Located in the Dale of Ardynn in Ravenholt, this forest is locally known as the Ardynndale Forest. Situated on a highland that overlooks lake Ardynn, near the Ashbury border, this forest gets its name from the falcons who live in the Tower Hills, and rest in its trees before winging off to hunt over the lake.

 

Gallyamath Forest: Wood elves and humans people this large wood to the south of the Nishapur Forest. The human contingents seem to follow an almost Barbarian culture which is of a nomadic and tribal nature. Both races gather a rare brown mushroom that is a primary ingredient in most hallucinoid elixirs. The woods themselves are composed primarily of cedar and pine, and these aromas always linger throughout this wood.

 

Icewood Forest: Far to the north and west of Volta, the Icewood Forest is called so because of the ice which coats it throughout the long winter season. The Icewood is nearly as large as the Nishapur Forest, to the southwest of Lake Quentari. These woods are home to goblins and their kin, but are none the less dangerous for all of that. The trees found here are mainly pine, maple and oak.

 

Lost River Forest: In the center of Therendry, there is a large mysterious forest of maple and ash with a missing river. To be more precise, The Lost River flows into the forest from the Loretold Mountains and disappears underground shortly thereafter. It surfaces and reappears near the southeastern edge of the forest. It is a notable oddity of this forest that the woods are clear and open to easy travel, though there are few woodsmen or rangers in residence.

 

Mystic Wood: In the center of the Northern Marches is a peculiar place known as the Mystic Wood. These woods abound with spirits and magicks, and are peopled by a race ?commonly known as the Mystic Wood Elves. These beings are renowned as artisans, and often travel outside the wood for trade purposes. White pine and sugar maple are the commonest sorts of trees to be found, interspersed with juniper, comfrey, and mullein.

 

Nishapur Forest, Myrr: Of all the forests within eastern Avalon, this forest is perhaps the richest and the most dangerous. Fruits, nuts, vegetables, grains and livestock all grow here in abundance. This forest is also home to the Nishapur Sarr, or Leopard clan, who cultivate these resources. Some of the dangers associated with this forest are the large predators, such as the Tikya bird, and the poisonous plants, such as the Rycen, which has thorns that will reputedly kill a troll within minutes.

 

Shakar Forest, Myrr: Near the capital of Myrr, grows a large stand of giant pine called Aspinquindella. This species of pine is commonly seen to grow to well over a hundred feet tall. They are often used as raw material for the masts of ships all over Avalon. This forest is unremarkable and curiously empty but for the rangers who husband it.

 

Shapur Wood, Myrr: Outside the center of Myrr society, this forest has a variety of woodland creatures. The trees of this wood are old and varied in species, and create a very peaceful atmosphere. The forest is governed by an ancient Sarr who is simply called "the one." In the center of the forest is an ancient, ruined, old stone building of unknown origins.

 

Shimmerglen Forest: This great forest borders the Duchy of Elysia in Evendarr and the lands of Avendale, founded north of Elysia in 597 ER by Lady Niomi Avendale of Evendarr.

 

Stonewood Forest, Barony of Capulus, Duchy of Ravenholt: Home to the humorless Stone elves, this Capulan forest provides the hardest wood in the kingdom of Evendarr. This wood is used to manufacture the strongest warships for the Royal Navy of Evendarr. The forest is small and the Stone elves control it exclusively. They have a treaty with the Capulans for lumbering the wood from the forest.

 

The Taursiloriel, Quentari: This is the largest forest in Quentari. The capital city of Din-Oth is located within a huge clearing within this forest. The forest contains almost all sorts of trees, shrubs and wildlife. The Quentari elves limit hunting within this forest to a minimum. Patrolling rangers guard the boundaries, and all non-elves are discouraged from entering. A cypress swamp is found where the forest runs up to the Rintir Marsh. Trees grow very tall within the Taursiloriel. It is the source of wood for the crafting of ships for the Quentari Navy, which patrols the Inland Sea, Lake Quentari. The name Taursiloriel means "Green Forest" in elven, and is a very apt name for this region.

 

Whitemane Forest, Evendarr: This is the last stand of old growth forest left in the center of the kingdom of Evendarr. The forest has shrunk significantly over the years, once running all along the Arawyn Mountains. "Whitemane" refers to the name of a horse belonging to the first king of Blackstone, who named the forest after his charger. The trees found here are notable for their marbled, brown-colored bark.

 


III. Swamps

 

Great Dark Swamp:

 

Helevorn Swamp: A shallow portion of Lake Helevorn that has been encroached upon by land based plants of the area. The swamp consists of cypress, acacia, sumac and willow trees. Disease problems and alligator attacks make this area a dangerous one.

 

Kitherian Mires: These mires are formed by the meeting of the Klew and Lorin rivers in the center of the Kitherian bowl. The mires are an odd kind of inverted delta, consisting of plains of mud and islands within the river channels. Although the mud is very fertile, this land is too dangerous and unstable to be populated.

 

Kragen Moor: Where the Kragen river meets the Winterwyrm river in northern Cumberland, there is a long shallow flood plain along the river’s bank. The perpetually damp soil and fertile land have grown into a hummocky, overgrown wetland. Bridges are built between the hummock islands, as during the spring, flooding makes travel through the moor almost impossible without them.

 

Mantoya Swamp:

 

Rintir Marsh: This marsh has the greatest diversity of any swamp in eastern Avalon. The marsh changes from wetland hummocks at the Rintir River’s headwaters to a cypress swamp inside the Taursiloriel. The hundreds of trees present within it include sumac, tupelo gum, magnolia, mangrove, and cypress. Carnivorous plants are also represented here, such as sundew, and pitcher plants.

IV. Geographical Areas

 

Barren Coast: Along the shores of Rotaria, the Bone Mountains come all the way to the sea. The coast is rocky and unsuited to farming. There are few trees, and habitation is limited to a scant few fishing villages. The region is a wasteland, and even pirates will not locate there by choice.

 

Evendarr Plain: This plain lies in between the Greenmarch Mountains, the Arawyn Mountains, the Sardon Hills, and Lake Hollym. The Endyr and Velowyn Rivers irrigate this richly fertile area. This area is the center of the kingdom of Evendarr, and the most densely populated region in eastern Avalon.

 

Gateway Plains: Flowing out of Lake Quentari, the mighty Gateway River rolls to the sea through a great level plain. These plains are fertile, but are often littered with the debris that spring floods leave scattered across the landscape. The plains can be a precarious place to live, and many towns along the banks of the Gateway River are built on stilts so that the floods will not destroy them.

 

Green Coast: From the Ash Mountains through the Arawyn Mountains, including Blackstone, Arawyn, and Baltaria lies an amazing stretch of fertile soil, and good beaches. The best sailors in Avalon come from this area. The only active volcano on the coast of Avalon is to be found here as well. It is Mount Sarobar, in the Black Hills.

 

Kalaloch Plateau: This plateau is an extension of the Quentari highlands. The Ashbury River originates here, and flows across the plateau, falling off forty miles after the river Current joins it. The plateau encompasses parts of Trellheim, Jennith, and Anym. Although the altitude is not in excess of 3000 feet, the climate is much drier than would normally be expected, giving rise to dust storms often in the early spring and late autumn.

 

Kitherian Bowl: This is one of the most densely populated areas throughout the range of this writing. The area is a roughly circular depression, surrounded by the Arawyn Mountains to the east, and the Greenmarch Mountains to the north, and west. Two great rivers, the Lorin and the Klew, drain to the center of this depression, and down a channel to Lake Helevorn.

 

Nordenn Vale: This region is geographically isolated. Surrounded by hills to the north, east and west, and bounded to the south by Lake Hollym, there is little farming done here, as the soil is poor and rocky. Mining and quarrying are the major sources of income for the region.

 

Northern Marches: These are the ancient homelands of Northmen, and Goblins. These lands have rich soil, filled with valuable ores such as iron (Westmarch) and silver (Cathym). These marches consist of rolling hills, small forests, and wide plains, and are well irrigated by runoff from the mountains surrounding the area. The climate is temperate.

 

Plains of Hadran: These are huge tracts of flat lands that stretch from central Niman to other lands to the very Far West. These plains are arable, but tend toward extreme temperatures. Some areas in the southern plains are semi-arid and filled with loess and other erosion debris.

 

Storm Coast: The coast of Draelonde consistently suffers from severe northeast storms that come in off the Great Northern Ocean. Along the coast are steep cliffs, sharp rocks, and swift currents. The fierceness of the local storms and inhospitable nature of the coast make this area virtually uninhabited above ground.

 


V. Mountains and Hills

 

Anymdin Mountains: These mountains form the border between Anym and Dinsdale in Volta. They were previously called the Trollsteeth Mountains, after the resident trolls. Trolls later ceased to populate these mountains after copper was found in abundance. These mountains reach a maximum elevation between four and seven thousand feet.

 

Arawyn Mountains: These mountains separate Blackstone from Kitheria. The highest peaks crest at ten thousand feet. The valleys and crags form a majestic landscape. Underneath the surface is one of the mightiest dwarven kingdoms within the lands of Evendarr, called Holmgate. Carved into the rock faces are the likenesses of the ancient kings who ruled there many hundreds of years before. The terrain in the mountains is difficult to cross. The only surface route, Kren Pass, was carved through the mountains as well. Castle MacAliester guards Kren Pass, and is one of the most powerful fortresses in Evendarr.

 

Ash Mountains: All through central Rotaria are the shells of extinct volcanoes. Once these volcanoes spewed ash and pumice over the landscape, creating fertile topsoil in the area. Time has worn hard on these mountains, and they now stand only a thousand or so feet above the plains. This area is the heartland of Rotaria.

 

Battle Downs: This range of hills between the Nordenn Dale and the Evendarr Plain is so named because it was the battleground between the Nordenns and the Evendarrians during the expansion of the kingdom of Evendarr. The downs are not very tall, reaching a maximum height of only a few hundred feet. They are steep, and very defensible, thus they’re choice location as a battleground.

 

Black Hills: This is the location of the only currently active volcano in Avalon. Mt Sarobar is a shield volcano, erupting regularly, and greatly enhancing the fertility of the local topsoil. Black volcanic rock in the area has eroded to form the black sand beaches, which give Darksands Bay to the north its name. The seafaring people of Blackstone have made their fortunes trading the volcanic glass found here for other treasures. The hills rise no more than one thousand feet above the level of the sea.

 

Bone Mountains: This steep wall of stone along the Barren Coast of Rotaria is almost impenetrable. Steep cliffs and sharp crags make travel difficult and treacherous among the three thousand-foot peaks. Slate is the most common rock here, but old fossils of strange and wondrous animals can be found as well. The soil here is poor, except in the northern regions near Capulus. The tallest peak is Death’s Horn, which crests at approximately three thousand feet.

 

Dark Hills:

 

Dark Blood Mountains: These coastal mountains of Dar Khabad and Myrr are rich in garnet. The name is originally a corruption of the name Dar Khabad, but still rightly fits the region. Although they are not tall, these mountains are steep and barren. Travel in this area is often hazardous. The interesting and attractive geological features of these mountains are two almost molten looking waves in the layers of rock strata. The region is filled with garnet mines that produce huge quantities of the blood red gemstone.

 

Dragonsteeth Mountains: Rising like great spikes from the surrounding landscape, these mountains are named for their resemblance to the teeth of their perhaps mythical inhabitants. The lands surrounding are populated by dark elves. Travel through these mountains is discouraged due to the hazards of the terrain. The cliffs are steep, the rocks are sharp, and foul creatures are commonplace. Though equally as dangerous as the Frostpeaks, the Dragonsteeth peak at an elevation of not more than twenty thousand feet. The most interesting feature in this range is Horned Mountain, which has two tall tower-like spikes that rise from its crest.

 

Fire Downs: This long range of high hills runs along the edge of the Kalaloch Plateau in the Barony of Endarr. The Fire Downs are good grazing areas and support huge numbers of cattle. Although hay is plentiful on the downs, and grass fires are very common during the late summer and early fall.

 

Frostpeak Mountains: These are the tallest mountains in all of Tyrra. They stand about 25000 feet tall in the center of Volta. The tallest peak, Thyrra Mak Dan, reaches almost 40,000 feet into the sky. The Frostpeak Mountains are as the name suggests, covered in snow all year ‘round. These mountains are incredibly dangerous to travel, and hundreds of Voltans die each year in accidents and avalanches. From the heights of these mountains flows the Silver River, which reflects the wealth of silver to be found here.

 

Giantos Range: These mountains are an offshoot of the Ouachitamougi Mountains. Soaked by torrential rains each year, the Giantos range forms the headwaters of the Gran Purna River system. The hills and mountains of this range peak at 1500 ft. In the center of this range is rumored to be the home of a powerful wizard who has lived for eons.

 

Green Mountains: In south central Niman, the Green Mountains form the last non-eroded granitic intrusion through the Quentari Highlands. Residents of the area engage in farming, and these low mountains are covered in a lush growth of foliage. Hot springs that well up in the valleys make the climate fairly temperate here all year round.

 

Greenmarch Mountains: These mountains overlook Lake Helevorn from a height of six thousand feet, with some peaks almost doubling that. These mountains are highly farmed and cultivated, giving them their rich green color in summer. Travel through these mountains is safe, and there are many trails between settlements. Humans, elves and dwarves all commonly settle throughout this area.

 

Grey Hills: A most prolific mining resource of northern Avalon is situated within the Grey Hills. The iron ores mined in these Westmarch mines are notable for their resistance to rust. Pocked with active iron mines, and densely populated, these hills are heavily traveled, and very safe. Inclusions of granite in the surface of the soil give these hills their characteristic grey color. Most of these hill peak at four hundred feet or less.

Grond Hills: Marking the boundary of the Gateway Plains, is a group of hill that surrounds a central mountain. These hills are home to Takkardia, a dwarven kingdom rich in mining and smithies. Travelling merchants often frequent this area, coming to trade with the resident dwarves. These hill peak no higher than six hundred feet.

Loretold Mountains: A few thousand foot tall mountains are interspersed with high hills and fog shielded valleys. The Theren King Meldon, who maintained the legend told of riches to be found in these hills, settled these mountains. Sapphires and diamonds are mined here by settlements of humans and elves that claim this territory jointly. Travel can be dangerous due to continued barbarian raids into the area.

 

Northern Downs: Located between the Norther and Winterwyrm rivers stand a group of rolling high hills which had previously been home to nomadic barbarian tribes. Presently these hills mark the border between northern Eastwyck, and the Goblin held lands of the western northern marches. These downs are easy traveling terrain, and good hunting grounds for small game. There is a deep gorge cut into the rock in the center of these downs, where the water runs in white thick rapids.

 

Ouachitamougi Mountains: Far beyond the shores of Lake Quentari rise the Ouachitamougi Mountains. They range in height from several hundred feet to several thousand feet. This interesting collection of hills and mountains comprises a compound geographical barrier. Climactic conditions in the area cover it with lush and temperate rainforest. These lands are home to a small and peaceful kingdom called Wolvaera. Wolvaera is inhabited mainly by humans.

 

Sardon Hills: These hills separate the northern Green Coast from the Evendarr Plain. The iron mines of central Evendarr are located here, as well as several gold mines. Sapphires and onyx are also mined in this geologically wealthy area. The soil here is rich and arable as well.

 

Tower Hills: The initial settlers of Ashbury named these hills for the tall thin spires of rock that distinguish this area. Stone is quarried here for the construction of fortresses. These hills are also home to dwarves who mine it and trade its rarer minerals. The hills themselves peak at no more than two hundred feet, and seem insignificant next to the neighboring tall stone spires.

 

Western Hills: To the north west of Lake Quentari are found the Western Hills. These hills, named by itinerant Nimani merchants, are located in an arid pocket of the Plains of Hadran. Consisting primarily of granite, these hills are not arable, and support little life.

VI. Rivers

 

Ardynn River: This river courses about the Dale of Ardynn in Ravenholt. The Tributaries of this river are small streams that flow out of the Tower Hills. This river has levies, constructed by the Ardynnites, which can be opened to drain the river into the local fields for irrigation purposes. Thin and deep, this river is bridged in several places to facilitate travel.

 

Ash River:

 

Ashbury River: The Ashbury River forms a physical border between the Duchies of Ashbury and Volta in Evendarr. The river is wide and is a major method of trade and transport for items shipped to Lake Ardynn. The riverbeds are rocky, and here are found convenient smoothed cobbling stones for the repair of roads throughout the kingdom of Evendarr.

 

Authomonagga River:

 

Ausoun River: This river forms the western border of Therendry. The river is fed from springs that flow out of the Loretold Mountains. Travel on this river is quite common, but it is neither very deep, nor wide. Disputes between fishermen and traders are commonplace. Ausouns are a rare type of bird that nest in the area around this river in the wintertime.

 

Bened River:

 

Birtzan River: This river runs between the Ouachitamougi mountains and Lake Birtzan on the edge of the Nishapur forest. The river’s course is clear, and it travels down it at an easy pace. The Birtzan is a settled river, and constantly adapts its flood plain. The Birtzan River joins with thee Koh-I-Dazan inside the Nishapur Forest to form the Farlirr.

 

Black River: This river runs across the Green Coast to Darksands Bay, where it forms the great northern border of Blackstone. The river gets its name from the black sand at its mouth. Fishermen frequent the area, as bass and trout are common to these waters.

 

Blood River: This river is the runoff from Lake Ardynn, and flows to the sea through the center of Ravenholt. The name of the river comes from the blood that was spilt into the river during the war with the Northmen, which stained the river a deep red color, as well as the red clay that lines its banks. The river is navigable except for a few falls along the route. The most famous of these are the falls just outside of Garson’s Bridge.

 

Clear River: This river is formed from the melt waters of the Frostpeak mountains. It runs very clear and cold. The Clear River is wide but very shallow, sounding only about a fathom at its deepest point. Its painfully cold water makes this river unsuitable for fish but crabs thrive there.

 

Derby River:

 

Dragonwash River: This river flows out of the Dragonsteeth mountains in northern Draelonde, and across the plains to the Dragoncliff Falls overlooking the Bay of Pecare’. These falls are one of the most spectacular sights in all of Avalon, at three hundred feet tall. The river has a strong current.

 

Elorin River: This calm and placid stream flows out of the Dryad Wood. It is perhaps one hundred feet wide at most points, but scarcely ten feet deep at any point. It is an excellent route for barge traffic between Evendarr and the southern duchies, but is too shallow to support large ship traffic. There are many small sandbars and sediment islands along the course of the river, which wash out in flood season, but reappear each year in exactly the same places.

 

Endyr River: This river is not navigable upstream of its intersection with the Velowyn, but downstream, it is the main trading route to Lake Hollym from Evendarr City. The true source of this river is unknown. Its apparent origin is a cave on Solstice Mountain in the northern Greenmarch Mountains. The cave is several hundred feet above the plain, and the watercourses run down through a series of small falls to reach it.

 

Fallow River: This river rolls out of the Plains of Hadran to feed into Lake Quentari. It is so named because its unreliable water supplies often cause fields nearby it to lie fallow from lack of moisture. Sometimes this river is full and navigable, and sometimes it runs low, and is choked with sediment, at other times, it flows in torrents and floods the surrounding areas.

Gateway River: This powerful river is the largest in Avalon, draining most of the interior. This river is a highway to the sea, traveled by huge numbers of people. The river is often up to a mile across, and runs smoothly and fairly straight to the sea. This river forms the boundaries of several different countries as it flows from Lake Quentari to the Fellmist Sea.

 

Gerrnota River:

 

Gran Purna River: With its headwaters in the Giantos range, this great river flows through the interior of Avalon, and south to the Straits of Hrakun. The river has many tributaries that join it all along its route. It is often clogged with the silts and debris from many lands. The name of this river means “Great Brown River”.

 

Green River: Slicing through Nordenn Vale, the Green River bounds Rotaria from Ashbury. The river is so named for the lush plant growth that abounds on its banks. Just after it leaves Lake Hollym, the river carries peculiar phosphorescent algae, which illuminates its channel at night for several miles down stream.

 

Icewash River: This river runs cold from the melts of the glaciers in the Frostpeak Mountains to the shores of Crystal Lake. Bitterly cold, this river has been known to freeze as early as late fall, and never thaw at all until late spring. Large rocks left behind by the thawing glaciers dot the river’s course and make navigation difficult even when the river is free of ice.

 

Jauf River:

 

Koh-I-Dazan: This translates to "River" in the ancient Sarr language. This river, along with the Birtzan, is a tributary of the Farrlirr. It is shallow and only fir to be traveled by barges or other shallow draft boats. The water is murky and filled with silt and sand, providing an ideal habitat for catfish and perhaps other unknown creatures.

 

Korok River:

 

Kragen River: This "river" would be more aptly named an overgrown stream. The Kragen heads from a pond in the marches to the north of Eastwyck. The river was named for the moor at its terminus, which it is responsible for creating. This river is too small for any major navigation, but still supports small barge traffic along its course.

 

Krun River:

 

Lorin River: This river provides most of the water to the Kitherian Bowl. The Lorin River feeds and drains the Kitherian mires, and also feeds Lake Helevorn. It is an excellent source of trout and catfish. Its water is used for irrigation. Lorin was the name of a past king of this region, and he named the river after himself. There is often a spring sailing festival on the river in flood season.

 

Lost River:

 

Mwoonyrr River: This river’s name is ancient, and believed to originate from ruins in the area. Its course takes it through the arid Dasht-I-Lut region of Myrr. The river is easily traveled, and provides food and water for the entire area.

 

Otiket River: This river originates in the western slopes of the Greenmarch Mountains. It is a tributary of the Gateway River. It carries large amounts of sediment and debris. The fertile benefits of these nutrients can easily be seen in the fields that border the river’s channel.

 

Red River: This river is the major trading route to and from Lake Hollym. Red clay and iron ores from the surrounding soil discolor the water to a rusty red. This river runs deep, and is often used to bring warships and large merchant vessels inland. River travelers can also enjoy the beautiful scenery in and around the Sardon Hills.

 

Rinmor River: The Quentari elven "River of the Dead" flows through a valley of the Greenmarch Mountains from Lake Helevorn. People of Kitheria use this river as a trade route to Niman, Therendry, and other points. This river is inhabited by a large number of merfolk.

 

Rintir River: The name of this river means “Remember to watch” in the Quentari language. This warning presumably refers to the land on the northern bank of the river. The river’s course has fallen due to earthquakes and other natural disasters and become unnavigable in many places over the years. This river is also inhabited by schools of freshwater sharks.

 

River Current: This quick, rough river forms the natural border between Volta and Niman. Though this river’s course cannot be sailed, sturdy barges take advantage of its strong currents to travel down stream. The river’s current has also been harnessed all along its banks to mill the wheat grown in the area.

 

River Colthis:

 

River Din: Roaring from the Anymdin Mountains, the River Din runs over a stepped series of waterfalls. This river is very aptly named, as its roar can be heard for great distances. The waters are turbulent and dangerous to travel until they reach Dinsdale, but run clear and bright and free of debris.

 

River Ecilmi: This river is a great tributary of the Gran Purna. The Ecilmi drains the northernmost range of the Ouachitamougi Mountains, and boasts very safe and clear sailing. The people of Wolvaera inhabit the river’s banks, and carry out their business along it. The Ecilmi itself is well entrenched in its plain, and meanders casually along.

 

River Farrlirr: Full of silt and debris, the Farrlirr washes out of the Nishapur Forest, and down to Lake Quentari. The Farrlirr is a product of the Birtzan and Koh-I-Dazan rivers where they meet in Nishapur. These waters continuously wash away the soil of that forest, but still fail to remove the ancient trees themselves. The river is a known habitat for many exotic life forms and often attracts curiosity seekers. This river is fairly safe to travel.

 

River Ghoti:

 

River Hadran: This large powerful river meanders across the Plains of Hadran. The Hadran’s strong current and wide banks make it difficult to cross, but easy to travel. There are many finger rivers that empty into the Hadran throughout its course. Merchants use the River Hadran to move wares throughout the civilized Nations of Avalon. One can catch a Ferry along the busier roads along this great river. This river drains to the northwest, where it empties into the Great Northern Ocean.

 

River Klew: This river flows from the Arawyn Mountains, and like it’s headwater, is very warm. Along the banks of the river, moss, algae and lily pads grow in abundance. The river is a major waterway, and many migratory birds winter in its warmth. A beautiful feature of this river is Rainbow Falls, where the water plunges from its headwater at Arawyn Lake. There is a perpetual rainbow over these falls on any sunny day.

 

River Norther: This river streams from the runoff of the Northern Downs. The river’s flow downstream is calm and lazy, its shallow depth makes crossing easy, but navigation nearly impossible. Downstream, where the Norther feeds the Winterwyrm, whitewater rapids are common, as the river drops out of the downs into the lower marches.

 

River Skorl:

 

River Teale: Escaping the Icewood Forest, the River Teale flows through the Shimmerglen Forest into the River Hadran. The name of the river, translated from the original goblinish, means “wet”. Goblins are the main inhabitants of the area. This river does freeze over in winter, but is quite safe for travel when it thaws.

 

River Thamorz:

 

Roverling River: This wide river gets its name from the lazy flow of its water down stream, and the long curving meanders in its course. The river is a primary trade route between Wolvaera, Ignavis, Dar Khabad, and Quentari. Silt and floods are common in the spring, often leaving many of the huge catfish that reside on the bottom of this river stranded on shore.

 

Sandy River:

 

Shiraz River: This clear slow river forms the connection between Lake Jauf and the Mwoonyrr River. The water’s spring fed origins make this river very cold, but also clear and filled with food for the fish, which thrive here. The local Sarr use by-products of this water to strengthen the hulls of ships constructed here.

 

Silver River: This broad river flows out of the northern Frostpeaks. The river takes its name from the silver found in the riverbed sediments, which led to the discovery of silver ore in Cathym. A notable feature of this river is that it is stocked with salmon which swim upstream during the spring to spawn. Bears and fishermen come from far and near to enjoy the huge harvest of fish.

 

South Taug River:

 

Stoney River: This river rushes from the heights of the Dragonsteeth Mountains. The course of this river is steep and filled with large boulders from the surrounding terrain. This river is not at all navigable. Land travel in this area is also treacherous and dangerous.

 

Swift River: This river is known for its great waterfalls and many rapids. The river is not generally considered navigable to most vessels, due to its strong current. It feeds into the River Hadran. Once every four years, the local inhabitants gather during late summer to hold a festival of swimming, rafting, diving, wrestling and drinking.

Velowyn River: This river flows from the foothills of the Greenmarch Mountains to the Endyr River. The Velowyn is a major trade route to and from Evendarr City. Much construction has occurred to build a canal from the river to the city. The river is named after an ancient queen who was the first to conquer and unite the area.

 

White River: This river is so named because it is its most common surface color. The river is filled with whitewater rapids and is thus not considered to be navigable. The White River constitutes the physical border between Ravenholt and Rotaria, and is heavily guarded.

 

Winterwyrm River: This largest tributary of the Blood River forms the boundary between the baronies of Eastwyck and Cumberland. This river is the main drainage for the center of the Northern Marches. It is also a major thoroughfare between the Northern Downs and Central Ravenholt.

 

Woodwash River: Swiftly flowing from the Taursiloriel, this river is filled with rapids and waterfalls, and thus is not considered navigable. A road had been constructed next to the river to allow for portage downstream to avoid these hazards. The King’s Road crosses the river at the Ivey Fjords, where the river is wide and shallow.
